Description
Cooking salt: flavouring and preservative at the same time
Cooking salt today serves a wide variety of purposes. It is one of the most widely used products in the kitchen. Cooking salt consists of 99% sodium chloride (NaCl). Many processed and ready-to-eat foods contain cooking salt. In addition, we tend to add too much during cooking. The salt is also used as a preservative by sprinkling it over perishable foods. That is what we call brining. The salt dries out the bacteria present. So it is used as a seasoning, but also as a preservative. You can order this salt online from us in a package of 7 or 25 kilos.
Where does cooking salt come from?
Salt occurs in nature in places where former inland seas have dried up. It is also the most important component of seawater. The cooking salt that you can buy online from us comes from your own country. In the Netherlands salt is extracted by evaporating brine. This is done by pumping water into salt-rich soils. A sea evaporated in these specific places millions of years ago.
Cooking salt and the difference with sea salt
Cooking salt differs from sea salt in the way it is extracted. Sea salt is obtained from the sea with the help of sun and wind and is therefore inexhaustible and ecological. Classic cooking salt is chemically purified after extraction and then heated and crystallized. Sea salt consists of different types of salt and therefore has a different taste. The classic cooking or table salt loses the variety of salts during chemical processing. As far as healthy properties are concerned, the two types of salt do not differ from each other. Sea salt also consists mainly of minerals (NaCl). The difference between the two is therefore only in the taste.
The recommended amount of cooking salt
Without cooking salt living is almost impossible. The salt adds extra flavour to many food products. Salt is already present in most pre-packed foods and you easily consume too much without even noticing it. It is important to use the salt in moderation. The upper limit is six grams of salt per adult per day. This corresponds to 2.4 grams of sodium.
