Ingredients nigella seed
Black cumin [Latin: Nigella sativa], also known as nutmeg flower is a perennial, herbaceous plant and known species of buttercup family. Despite the name "black cumin" the plant is unrelated to the ordinary cumin [Cuminum cyminum] or nature chestnut / black sesame seeds [Bunium bulbocastanum]. The seeds are typically short roasted in a frying pan or baked in the beginning of the cooking process in order to obtain a nutmeg-like flavor. In Indian, Turkish, Persian, Egyptian and Greek cuisine, the seeds are used to decorate breads or ground to give flavor to meat dishes. Black cumin is used since ancient times as a medicine. The plant part that is most widely used are the seeds, especially the oil extracted from these seeds.

Description

The powerful action of nigella seeds (black cumin)

Nigella seeds is a spice derived from the plant Nigella Sativa. The plant is also called nutmeg flower. It grows in South and Southwest Asia. Its name comes from the Latin word 'niger', which means black. Nigella seeds are also called black cumin, although it has no connection with the common cumin. The seeds are used both for their taste and for decoration. You can order them online at Natural Spices in a package of 500 grams or 1, 5 or 25 kilos.

How do you use nigella seeds?

Nigella seeds have hardly any smell of its own. When you put it on your tongue, you will taste something reminiscent of oregano, but more spicy. The taste of nigella seeds is enhanced by briefly roasting or frying in oil of your choice. The dried, black seeds in the shape of small triangles are mainly added to meat dishes and chutneys from the East. You can also sprinkle baked bread or naan bread with them. You often see this in Turkish loaves. The seeds acquire a nutmeg-like flavour during the preparation process, which is why the plant is also called nutmeg flower. Besides adding the seeds to meals, you can also use it to make tea, or mix it as a powder with herb butter.
