Description
Ponceau red powder, an alternative to red cactus lice
Ponceau red powder or Cochineal red A is a colouring agent regularly used in today's food industry. Ponceau red powder exists in powder, granulate and liquid form. At Natural Spices you can order the powder variant in a package of 200 grams or a kilo online. Ponceau red powder is used for colouring many different products. It is often used for pudding, drinks and fish products.
The difference between ponceau red powder and cochineal
The difference between ponceau red powder and cochineal is often confused. The colour additive is also known as cochineal red A, so you might think that it has a connection with cochineal or carmine (E120). Cochineal is made from the bright red shields of cactus lice. Cochineal red A, however, is its synthetic variant and therefore has nothing to do with the lice. The synthetic cochineal red A or ponceau red powder has been assigned number E-124 by the European Commission. This artificial variant is being used more and more frequently because it is easy to make, cheap and also more colour stable than natural cochineal.
What is ponceau red powder?
So the powder is not the same as the colouring agent of the red cactus lice. But what is ponceau red powder? This synthetic substance falls under the so-called azo colours and they do not occur in nature. Azo stands for aluminium salt of carminic acid. More than half of the food colours fall into this category. They are not sensitive to light or oxygen.
Is ponceau red powder safe?
Ponceau red powder has been assigned E number 124 by the European Commission. This means you can be sure that the use of this colour is completely safe. The ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) was considerably reduced a number of years ago. It is now defined as 0.7 mg/kg. Research has shown that the additive can adversely affect the alertness of children. Its use is also not recommended for people with asthma. By buying this product online you get efficient and inexpensive colouring agent. It is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
