Description
Warm, spicy and aromatic organic ground nutmeg
Organic ground nutmeg is an indispensable spice in the kitchen. Thanks to its warm, slightly sweet and aromatic flavour it fits perfectly in both sweet and savoury dishes. Many people know nutmeg from classics such as mashed potatoes, cauliflower and green beans, but it also plays an important role in cookies, pastries and speculaas spices.

Where does organic ground nutmeg come from?
Nutmeg comes from the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans), which grows in tropical areas such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India. The fruit resembles a small apricot. When it is ripe it splits open and the hard seed appears. This seed is dried and then ground into the fine spice we know as ground nutmeg.
Around the seed is a bright red aril. This is also dried and used as a spice and is known as mace. Because mace and nutmeg come from the same fruit, they are similar in taste. Nutmeg has a warmer, fuller and slightly sweeter flavour, while mace is somewhat subtler and fresher.
Our organic ground nutmeg comes from organically grown nutmeg seeds. In organic cultivation care is taken for people, animals and the environment and no synthetic chemical pesticides are used.
How do you use organic ground nutmeg?
Because of its powerful flavour you usually only need a small amount. Organic ground nutmeg is delicious in:
- mashed potatoes
- béchamel sauce
- cauliflower
- green beans
- Brussels sprouts
- pumpkin soup
- casseroles
- cookies and pastries
- apple pie
- rice pudding
Preferably add the spice during the final stage of preparation or taste at the end to see if an extra pinch is needed. This preserves the warm aroma optimally.
Is organic ground nutmeg healthy?
Nutmeg naturally contains various minerals, including potassium, calcium, iron and magnesium. Because you usually only use small amounts, it is primarily a flavouring that adds extra warmth and depth to dishes.
Always use nutmeg in moderation. Large amounts are discouraged because they can cause health complaints such as nausea, dizziness and a restless feeling. It is also wise to be cautious with large amounts of nutmeg during pregnancy.
