Sustainably Produced Herbs and Spices

At Natural Spices, we believe that flavour, quality, and sustainability go hand in hand. That is why we work with carefully selected suppliers and producers who prioritise people, nature, and product quality.

From the sourcing of herbs and spices to production, packaging, and transport: at every stage of the process, we continuously look for ways to reduce our environmental impact without compromising on quality or taste.

Our focus is on:

  • sustainable and controlled sourcing
  • organic herbs and spices
  • long-term supplier partnerships
  • efficient packaging and transport
  • reliable and transparent supply chains

Responsible Sourcing of Herbs and Spices

The quality of herbs and spices starts at the source. That is why we work with suppliers who meet strict standards in terms of quality, food safety, and sustainability.

By building long-term relationships with producers worldwide, we are able not only to ensure consistent quality, but also to maintain better oversight of working methods, origin, and product standards.

Organic Herbs and Spices

Natural Spices also offers a range of organic herbs and spices. These products comply with European regulations for organic production and are monitored by recognised certification bodies.

Organic products are produced without chemical pesticides or artificial fertilisers and respond to the growing demand for conscious and more sustainable food products.

SKAL Certified

For organic products, Natural Spices operates according to the guidelines of Skal Biocontrole. This independent organisation verifies whether organic products comply with legal requirements within the European Union.

This gives customers additional assurance regarding the origin and processing of organic herbs and spices.

All of our organic herbs and spices are SKAL certified. This means that the independent Skal foundation supervises the organic supply chain and checks whether production complies with the EU organic regulation.

Only when a company complies with the required regulations and inspections may it use the organic certification and quality mark. The SKAL quality mark therefore guarantees that organic products are genuinely organic.

Efficient Packaging and Transport

We also continuously look for improvements in logistics and packaging. By handling packaging, storage, and transport more efficiently, we aim to reduce waste and lower the overall impact within the supply chain.

In addition, we continue to invest in processes and partnerships that contribute to a more sustainable way of producing and supplying products.

In this report, we share how Natural Spices approaches sustainability within our organisation and supply chain. We outline the steps we are already taking, our future ambitions, and how we make our impact measurable according to the VSME standard.

RAW MATERIALS

Natural Spices inspects the quality at source; the raw materials that we buy from all over the world. We make high demands of our suppliers and our employees in order to conduct strict quality audits. By consistently pursuing this policy we succeed in encouraging our suppliers to maintain a constant high quality standard.

PRODUCTION PROCESSES

Natural Spices continuously invests in resources and personnel to monitor and ensure quality throughout the entire production process. Additionally, annual inspections are conducted by third parties, including government authorities, customers, and certification bodies.

Natural Spices holds an FSSC 22000 certification. The Foundation for Food Safety Certification (SCV) developed the FSSC 22000 standard, which has grown into a globally recognized benchmark for food safety management systems in the food industry. This standard is approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and provides a platform for the international harmonization of food safety standards.

FSSC 22000 is based on ISO 22000 in combination with ISO/TS 22002-1 (formerly PAS 220) for the food production industry. For wholesale, ISO/TS 22002-2 is applied, replacing PAS 221. These sector-specific guidelines support organizations in meeting the latest requirements and ensuring a robust management system.

ORGANIC

Organic is the best way to produce tasty and various foods with a respect for nature and without chemical pesticides or fertilisers. Furthermore, applications of genetically modified organisms are not permitted. European legislation dictates that a plant, animal or product can only be marketed as "organic" if it originates from certified and organic production.

Skal
SKAL is a supervisory body committed to the demonstrable reliability of organic products in the Netherlands. An agricultural product or food can only be named organic if the production process meets certain legal requirements. European government dictates the rules and almost 3,300 certified organic entrepreneurs adhere to these rules with Skal fulfilling a controlling function. In this way the consumer can be certain that an organic product is indeed an organic product.
