5X TIPS FOR HOMEMADE SPICE BLENDS

20/2/2023

Making a spice blend yourself is great fun, tasty and easy. Incidentally, also very healthy, because many spice blends in the supermarket unfortunately still contain a lot of sugars. On the internet you will find a wide range of good recipes for making healthy spice blends yourself. But how do you make your spice blend just that little bit better and tastier? Well-known TV chef London Loy gives you five tips to make your spice blends even more flavorful and tells you how to use them afterwards.

1. Use a coffee grinder

You can conjure up your old coffee grinder again. Time to make the best spice blend! With a coffee grinder you create the most delicious spice mixtures. Use whole herbs and spices for this and let the flavor explosion surprise you.

2. Use measuring spoons

You may be familiar with the following: the recipe says "1/8th teaspoon", or it says "use one tablespoon", but hey: one tablespoon differs from the other, making it difficult to estimate. There is a solution! Use a measuring spoon to measure the quantities better. Thanks to the standard sizes, you can always be sure that you are using the correct amounts.

3. Use your spice blend for multiple dishes

Have you made the spice blend and are you going to use them in your dish? Remember the following tip: you don't necessarily have to use a specific spice blend for that one dish. Take a ground beef spice mix, for example. This is of course very tasty with your meatballs, but did you know that you can also use it as a rub? By the way, London Loy uses this mix very often, so he likes to share the recipe with you: half teaspoon chili flakes, half teaspoon himalya salt, half teaspoon garlic powder, half teaspoon coriander, half teaspoon curry powder, 1.5 teaspoon black pepper ground and 1 teaspoon ginger powder.

4. Wake up the spice blend in a pan

This may need a little explanation. You can see it like this: when you preserve the spice blend, the seasonings are sleeping. When you heat the seasonings in a pan (this can be with or without oil) and shake, they wake up. And tada, the taste comes out more.

5. Store your spice blend airtight and in a dark place

Have you made your spice blend and have a little bit left? Then it is important that you keep it safe (or use it quickly ;-)). London Loy recommends keeping the spice mixes for about 3 months. In this way, the taste remains flavorful. When you notice that your spice blend is hardening, it is a matter of shaking it well. Don't worry, you can just keep using it.

Do you prefer convenience? Then our tasty, healthy and easy spice blends are definetely something for you.
