Why make shakshuka in the air fryer?

The air fryer provides even heat circulation, allowing the tomato sauce to gently thicken without burning. The chorizo releases its richly spiced oils into the sauce, while the eggs cook exactly the way you like them – soft and runny, or slightly firmer.

Recipe: Spicy Chorizo Shakshuka from the Air Fryer

Ingredients for Spicy Chorizo Shakshuka from the Air Fryer

Ingredients (serves 2–3)

  • 150 g chorizo, sliced or cut into half-moons
  • 1 red pepper, sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes (400 g)
  • 1½–2 tsp chorizo seasoning
  • 4–6 eggs
  • Olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional: fresh parsley or coriander, bread or pita to serve

Method

Prepare the base
In a heatproof dish, mix the chorizo, red pepper, onion and garlic with a drizzle of olive oil. Place in the air fryer at 180 °C for 5 minutes, allowing the chorizo to lightly fry and release its aroma.

Add the sauce
Add the chopped tomatoes and the chorizo seasoning. Stir well and return to the air fryer for 8–10 minutes at 180 °C, until the sauce has slightly thickened.

Cook the eggs
Make small wells in the sauce and crack the eggs into them. Return the dish to the air fryer and cook for 5–7 minutes, depending on how runny you like the yolks.

Serve
Finish with fresh herbs and serve immediately with crusty bread or pita.

Tips for the best result

  • Use a shallow dish so the sauce cooks evenly and the eggs are nicely spaced.
  • Avoid too much liquid: allow the sauce to thicken slightly before adding the eggs.
  • Watch the timing: check the eggs as every air fryer behaves a little differently.
  • Extra heat: add a pinch of chilli flakes alongside the chorizo seasoning.
  • Meal-prep friendly: prepare the sauce in advance and add the eggs only when reheating.
