Organic turmeric, also known as ‘organic koenjit’ or ‘Indian organic yellow carrot’ and in the past also as ‘tarmeriek’, is extracted from the plant Curcuma longa. It is made from the root of the plant. It is a fixed ingredient of curry powder and gives it the yellow colour (that also explains the name ‘Indian saffron’). The condiment has a somewhat bitter taste. Organic turmeric used mainly as a yellow colourant for colouring other spices and dishes. It is for example added to rice to make it yellow. Our organic ground turmeric contains a minimum 3% curcumine.

Which dishes fit with organic ground turmeric ?

Organic ground turmeric has a mildly bitter taste and is related to ginger. Turmeric is the root of the Curcuma Longa plant. Although it is mainly used as a colouring agent and added to soups, rice and cooked vegetables, it has more possibilities. The taste of organic ground turmeric goes well with sweet potato, carrot and pumpkin. The sweet flavours of these vegetables, together with the slightly bitterness of turmeric, form a balanced taste. Other herbs with which turmeric goes well with are coriander, cinnamon, cumin, fennel and ginger. In North Africa, the spice is often eaten in combination with lamb and vegetable dishes. Organic ground turmeric is added at the end of the preparation process.

Organic ground turmeric and curcumin

Organic ground turmeric can also be used as a medicine or painkiller. In case of a cold, tea with lemon, ginger and turmeric will quickly help you get back on top. Organic ground turmeric has an anti-inflammatory effect and is also a strong antioxidant. The substance curcumin is responsible for these beneficial properties. By the way, curcumin is the substance that is also permitted as colouring agent E-100 in foodstuffs. To be able to absorb curcumin even better, you should also use black pepper. The substance piperine in black pepper improves the release of the components of organic ground turmeric. Olive oil has the same effect as black pepper.
