Ground turmeric (Curcuma Longa L.), also known as ‘koenjit’ or ‘Indonesian yellow carrot’ and is extracted from the plant Curcuma longa. It is made from the root of the plant. It is a fixed ingredient of curry powder and gives it the yellow colour (that also explains it being called ‘Indian saffron’). The condiment has a somewhat bitter taste. Ground turmeric is used mainly as a yellow colourant for colouring other spices and dishes. It is for example added to rice to make it yellow. Our turmeric ground contains a minimum 2.5% curcumine.

What is turmeric?

When we talk about turmeric, we are talking about an orange-yellow spice also known as koenier, tumeric or kunyit. Turmeric is extracted from the Curcuma Longa plant and is grown in tropical and subtropical countries. The root of the turmeric plant is dried and ground into a fine powder after cultivation. The dried ground powder can be stored for a long time and is ready to add to various dishes.

How do you use turmeric? 

Turmeric is a seasoning that is used for a true color and taste sensation. The yellow color of turmeric is often used as a coloring agent so that you can easily put an attractive, colorful dish on the table. As for the taste, turmeric supports the taste of your dish and gives it a mild, aromatic and slightly bitter note. Turmeric is mainly added to curries, but is also delicious in other dishes. For example, you can also use it in wok dishes and soups. Or how about the popular turmeric latte or golden milk? You can easily make these by adding turmeric, together with ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and a pinch of pepper to (vegetable) milk.

Is turmeric healthy?

The strongest active ingredient from the root of the curcuma longa is curcumin. Curcumin could possibly have an anti-inflammatory effect because of the bomb of antioxidants and curcuma could give your health a boost. Yet there is still too little evidence for the miraculous effect of turmeric on your health. But despite that, the power of flavor means that you need to use less sugar and salt in your dishes - which is good for your health anyway. It is also good to mention that turmeric is poorly absorbed by the body. To properly absorb the turmeric, it is best to combine it with black pepper.

Turmeric powder or fresh turmeric?

Turmeric is available in several forms, for example fresh turmeric (the root) or in powder form. As far as we're concerned, turmeric powder is an absolute winner. You do not need to process turmeric powder further, you can add it in a controlled manner and it has a longer shelf life than fresh turmeric. And not unimportant: the taste of the turmeric powder is still matched with fresh turmeric.
