During the winter months and in times of corona it is important to give your immune system a good boost. Although the effect of herbs and spices on your immunity is not yet fully established, in this blog we provide an overview of herbs and spices that certainly should not be missing if you want to possibly increase your resistance in a natural way.
Herbs and spices help with a healthy and varied diet
A healthy and varied diet helps you boost your immunity. Herbs and spices are certainly part of that. In fact: by using herbs and spices you are more likely to prepare a healthy dish. For example, you can give vegetables a delicious twist using ginger, garlic, or our herb mix Habibi Veggie. And if it also turns out that these individual herbs and spices can perhaps help increase your immunity, then that's of course an extra bonus.
Ginger (djahe)
Ginger, also called djahe, comes from the ginger plant and may strengthen the immune system. A good immune system protects you against infections, colds and flu. For example, add some ginger to fruit like banana and apple and be surprised. Ginger also gives a delicious twist to vegetable dishes, curries and fish dishes. And a nice cup of ginger tea in the evening? We won't say no to that. As you can see, ginger and health certainly go hand in hand.
Garlic
Garlic contains antioxidants that help protect the immune system and thus may help prevent colds. Garlic is suitable for various dishes. It goes well with meat and fish dishes (think garlic shrimp), but is also delicious in salads and with vegetables. In addition, it gives soups, sauces and marinades a wonderful, full flavor.
Turmeric (koenjit/curcumin/yellow root)
Turmeric, also called koenjit, yellow root or turmeric, contains among other things the compound curcumin, an antioxidant that could help block infections. You can add turmeric powder to chicken and vegetable soups, but also to cooked vegetables and potatoes. Think of carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato, for example. And of course a nice turmeric tea or turmeric latte should not be missing either.
Parsley
Parsley is an herb and contains a large amount of vitamin C. Vitamin C plays a major role in strengthening the immune system, which in turn ensures that pathogens such as bacteria and viruses stay away. You can add parsley leaves to a variety of dishes. It is particularly tasty with asparagus, salmon and potatoes. In addition, it is also a delicious addition to stews, sauces and salads.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid/sodium ascorbate)
Speaking of vitamin C…Did you know we wrote a blog about it? In it we tell you more about the health benefits of vitamin C such as the effect on your immunity, the consequences of vitamin C deficiency and its intake. Not an herb or spice, but with us you can also order vitamin C (ascorbic acid/sodium ascorbate) to give your immunity a boost.
